AJC10 Week 48 preview - "Gaze on a Goal"

I came across the Gandhi quote yesterday morning from a blog I follow http://www.kindovermatter.com/2010/11/offering-peace.html The quote is how I try to live my life and how I aim to treat people I encounter as I go. It was such a beautiful quote I did to journal it to remember it and it went with "gazing on a goal" element of a quote included in the parcel.

AJC Week 24 - Inspired by Art

That week's theme was to explore the idea of being inspired by art. For the task I had bought a book called The Art Doodle Book, published by Buster Books, which includes excerpts from various artists's works for the doodler to continue. Instead I used some of the excerpts to draw this pastiche, using a eye from Picasso, the lips from Warhol and a Picasso alignment for the face. The facial outline is Modigliani and the blue figure is based on Matisse. Once I'd drawn the arrangement, I thought the "face" looked like she was thinking the blue figure like a Roy Lichtenstein picture and so that's how the words came about. The piece was drawn on sketch paper and as I rubbed out the pencil outlines, the rubber took some of the black from the eye. However, as it looked OK, I left the white patch :)

AJC week 23 - A Lady of Letters

In mid June I graduated, which I'll include later, but this layout I planned when the week's theme was set, although intially it was just going to be me surrounded by the alphabet, but then I thought of the letters I could put after my name and this was how it evolved.

AJC Week 23 catch-up - A Good Read

Week 23 asked us to journal our reading experiences. I don't read so much now, but as a child I loved to read books, particularly non-fiction. Books about animals and history were my favourites and loved it when we were set projects as it meant I could read around the subjects. In a book I could find out new information and travel around worlds. The Louisa May Alcott quote was one of the quotes for the week.

AJC week 22 Catch-up - From an Elephant Perspective

Whilst we were in London, there was an art project on called "The London Elephant Parade". There were 260 painted elephants "celebrat[ing] the beauty of the magnificent Asian elephant" - according to its website http://www.elephantfamily.org/how-can-you-help/events/elephant-parade-london-2010/ The elephants were in "parks, squares and [the] streets of central London... the biggest and most beautiful outdoor art event the city has ever seen... from May to June." The website said that the parade auction afterwards raised over £4 million. On our travels we spotted a few of them, so, in keeping with "from a different perspective", rather than including maps or photos of places we visited, I've mapped the travels by the elephants I photographed. The map placings of the elephants aren't necessarily correct but they were placed where they looked right, although the Natural History Museum one and the Covent Garden ellies are roughly right. The map and banner are from the website.

AJC week 22 - "Road Trip"

This week's theme was "A Different Perspective". It was also the end of the week that my son turned 13, and as it was his school half-term holidays, we went to London for a few days. We went to the Natural History Museum, The Tower of London (Tower Bridge being nearby), Covent Garden, the Ambassador Theatre to see "Stomp", and on the last day I went to the V&A, whilst hubby and son went back around parts missing at the Natural History Museum. We had an experience at the hotel - note to self: London's 4* is about everywhere else's 3* - but the trips out and walking around made up for that. We didn't actually drive there, so no road trip as such - we "let the train take the strain" - but we did go in a London Black Cab from Euston to Kensington (via Baker Street and Park Lane - a veritable Monopoly Board journey).

AJC10 Week 21 Catch-up - It's going to be OK

Week 21 catch-up - New Heights

When I saw the week's parcel colours of red, black and white, I looked out for embellishments that would go with that colourway, and loved this 3-D decoupage set. This week back in May was an important one as it was then that whilst waiting for the counselling to restart that I heard by chance Julie Chimes’s interview on Radio 2 with Jeremy Vine.

I was returning from Malvern (from a quilting show) and ordinarily I would not have been listening to the radio at that time in the day, but I used to live in Malvern during a bad, abusive time in my life and I try to return there for other reasons to detach the emotions from the location as the area is too beautiful in itself to avoid and give into the past. Each visit isn’t without some anxiety though, although the amount does decrease with good experiences.

Julie Chimes is a survivor of a fearsome knife attack which left her near-death. She recovered (no mean feat in itself) but more importantly she forgave her attacker and now spends her time promoting forgiveness and compassion, using her experiences to illustrate recovery and well-being. There is a saying that when the pupil is ready, a teacher will come. I wasn’t quite there at the time but was ready to listen to Julie’s words and remember, for a time to come.

The interview was a definite turning-point on my journey and this page reflects and celebrates this new path found. Julie wrote a book on her experiences, which I would recommend to read, particularly for its life-affirming qualities and the letters she composed in her mind as she recovered - "A Stranger in Paradise".

Week 20 catch-up: Forgiveness

This is a quote that I didn't get until May this year. The background was extracted from a photo my son took which I re-coloured to make darker.

Week 20 catch-up - blogged thoughts

The writing were my thoughts in May so it seemed appropriate to include these from my main blog as a scrapbooked page.

The blog of the week to explore was http://tumblefishstudio.blogspot.com/ who is also a digi-scrap seller, who produces digital collages. The background and elements are from Tumblefish Studios when she designed for Deviant Scrap and one of her then co-designers, Holliewood Studios.

Week 19 catch-up - inspired by...

The quote is based on a mini-book of advice that I wrote to myself following an Adult Education course I went on 2002-2004. The part-time course was designed to get people back into studies as a precursor to university studies, and the lessons I learnt along the way went into the mini-book. The page is inspired by Dawn Inskip's kit, Grace.

Week 19 Catch-up - Be inspired

For Week 19, we had to record what inspires us and this was the quote for the week. The colourfulness of the paper inspired me: I particularly liked the contrasts between the tags and the background and that inspired their use.

Week 18 Catch-up - a Rest Stop

Week 18 invited us to take a moment to listen to our response to the question "What do I need to journal about this week?" This did not inspire me, but the quote of the week did. I looked up "Excellence", given as the quality of excelling - not very useful. So I looked up the verb "Excel":

"be superior, better, pass, eclipse, beat, top, cap (informal), exceed, go beyond, surpass, transcend, outdo, outshine, surmount, run rings around (informal), put in the shade (informal), outrival..." Collins Thesaurus of the English Language – Complete and Unabridged 2nd Edition. 2002 © HarperCollins Publishers 1995, 2002. It didn't sound very nice, that to obtain excellence was to step over others, to be more perfect. I don't agree with that. I used to be a perfectist, to hope that reaching the top would mean that I would be acknowledged by my parents, particularly my dad, but I don't think that way anymore. Perfection is for robots, not for me. So I included a quote that I didn't agree with to remind me to "Love, Explore, Create, Imagine" rather than to seek excellence as that is deterimental to me.

Wk 41 preview

The idea of dancing on the inside was spawned by my VIP interview reply and once I saw the dancer in the Week 41 digital kit. I'm sitting stillish at the moment as I'm recovering from having my gall bladder removed just under a week ago. Today is the first day I've gone without plasters as I'm allergic to plasters and the rashes are itchier than the healing scars. I have to be careful with the laptop near my belly button because of an insertion there - for the laparoscope, in case you're wondering.

As promised - my interview link

I'm not usually so organised or so brave to be first for most things, but as I had my gallbladder removed last week, I wasn't sure when I would be able to answer questions, and I wanted to do the interview as it's something I wouldn't have ordinarily done before now. But in the spirit of letting go... deep breath and stepping out of the shadows... :)

Week 17 Catch-up: Listening

The quote came to me as soon as I heard what the theme of the week was back in April - to really listen to your heart and journal about it. So I wrote it down to wait for when I got to scrapping the page. The birdie paper I bought only a few months ago, so it was fortuitous that I didn't make the page earlier :)

Week 16 catch-up: Courage to become...

The e.e. cummings's quote was also something that caught my eye for the journal and the atc element added to the page is something I produced for a Q&A interview to appear at some time on a digitalscrapbooking blog. The interview is something that has been asked of all the VIP backstage passholders. When mine appears, I'll put up a link to it, but they wanted a ATC (Artist Trading Card) to introduce me, hence the "Born to shine, daring to sparkle" again.

Week 16 "Character Traits" - Boxes

The paper for week 16 inspired this page and an idea that I am developing for a tag-book - the paper looks a bit like post-its. As I grew up, I was given all sorts of negative labels - "stupid" etc. - so to redress the balance, I plan to make a mini-book using pages in the shape of tags, to remind me of my positive features. So this page is a work-in-progress for that future project as week 16's goal was consider what kind of character we are... The quote "Labels are for Boxes" comes from a course I did last year with a local mental health charity which was designed to help with mental wellbeing for my depression. I'm not sure about the white font, particularly on the ribbon, but yellow didn't suit.

Week 15 catch-up - BK/ODi concert

Back in April, I went to see Brian Kennedy in concert, which I enjoyed (review http://ajewelshiningthrough.blogspot.com/2010/04/brian-kennedy-concert-report-from-our.html), but I also enjoyed his support act, an accoustic boy-girl duo, known as ODi. In particular, one of their songs spoke to me at the time and I had to write down the lyrics to inspire me. These two pages were done at the time and now added as I've caught up to their week, but reading the lyrics again, now some 5 months later, I realise how much I have put behind me :)

Back to Catch-up: Week 15 tasks

Week 15 goes back to April-time and for this we had to consider how nature inspires art and soul. I love photography and love blossom, so had to include this picture I took a few years ago, as it was a great photo. I had to edit the digital frame to fit the photo :)

Bloom - week 39 Preview

Now this could get confusing I realise... I've got some catching up to do but because of the VIP pass, I have access to the forecoming week's tasks early. So my journal at the moment is at week 14, but I have also pages for week 39 too. However, no probs, I'll catch up the inbetween at some point. So this is the second page for the week 39's word of "Bloom".

VIP

A couple of months ago, there was an opportunity to join, as a VIP guest for 6 months, the creative studio of Tangie, who runs the Art Journal Caravan, and I umed and erred about it. There are people a lot more talented than me out there - how could I join to be a backstage guest, and deprave someone else as there were only 10 guest passes to buy? Anyway, I let chance in and had a go at getting a pass, and got in, after all, who is better at being me than me. The pass is for 6 months and of course I've had my surgery since so not had much chance to post anything, but my arm is feeling a bit better...

I gave up posting my art journal entries to the the Caravan's gallery as I got fed up with getting few feedback comments, compared to others, and so this blog is the only place to see my journal pages. This is a a piece I did for the preview of today's task - the keyword being "Bloom". My art is for me, which is just as valid a reason as any other. I have some catching up to do as today's officially the start of week 39, but it's still my week 14, but I'm not beating myself up about it. I'm looking at the scenery and enjoying the journey's ride...

A Tickled P!nk

My final page for this week came about as I received my tickets to see P!nk recently. I used a photocopy of my ticket for this week and the journalling label says "I'm sure you'd get it if you Tickled Pink". The goose in the background is a bit of a visual pun too, although a goose usually means more a pinch on the bum, so it's a tickle here. I'm starting to look forward to the concert, although I'm not a P!nk fan, but I'm looking forward to the staging and "theatricality" of the show, as P!nk performs quite a few acrobatic moves in the show apparently :)

Week 14 - Do you know what it feels like for a Girl?

As a child, I was often mistaken as a boy, because I was a slow-developer, tall, thin and my mum kept my hair cut short :( This is why I have longer hair now. The picture is of me as a bridesmaid for my godmother's wedding in 1968. The title is inspired by Glee's Madonna episode as it's a Madonna song lyric and fitted with the idea of the page. I never wore pink as a child as there weren't pink clothes in the 1960-70s. I went through a phase of wearing some pink a few years ago as an expression of my femininity but now I leave the pink to my phone and my socks :)

Week 14 - Tickled Pink

My scrapbook piece

This week's task was to explore what the saying "Tickled Pink" meant to us - what tickled our fancy etc... Here, "tickled pink" is a phrase associated with the pink breast cancer ribbon badge and it's this and inspiration from a magazine article that led to this piece - being tickled by pink ribbons.

April's divider

Week 14 (where I'm now upto) was the first in April, so after the prologue, I have a divider to make the month the projects were announced - earlier on, it was also the months in which I made the pages but, hey ;) As it is the beginning of my 2nd scrapbook art journal on this journey, this gives the opportunity to renew, review and revisit themes, hence the flowers on the front of the divider, in my eyes representing renewal - the blooming of thoughts already held - and the back of the divider represents the new thoughts that I am starting to have - hope and dreams for the future and freedom from the past x

Prologue to Part 2 of Letting Go

I liked having a prologue to the start of my journey and so I've continued that theme with the start of the next scrapbook album. The "freedom" thought came to me a few weeks ago, so over the last few months, because of the chance hearing of a radio programme I had. I was returning from Malvern Quilt Show and caught by chance, a radio interview by Jeremy Vine of a lady called Julie Chimes who survived a near-fatal stabbing and forgave the lady who stabbed her over 30 times. The story of the attack was harrowing but the way that she followed trauma by forgiveness, hit a note in me, and as it was something I needed to help my journey to let go of my past, is there really any "by chance" about it ;)

I'm a firm believer that I'm always in the right place at the right time, and that I deserve to be there - in order to learn a lesson, have a particular experience, met a particular person and/or to learn something about my self or my experiences. In Japanese I understand that they have the same word for problem as for opportunity - an opportunity to learn that maybe something is not for you. For a while I had no voice and I am still learning who am I after a considerable amount of time of being told who or what I was, but Julie's story shone a light on part of my own journey and has suggested a path, of forgiveness, for me to take as I was wondering my way towards it in the dark :)

So the first page of the prologue is effectively a statement to explore and come to believe that it's OK to let go, and to remind me that the journey is an adventure, to be seized as best as possible. The compass is to remind me that whilst I might not know where the journey will take me, I am never really lost.

As those following the Art Journal Caravan know, I've been on catch-up, as Easter holidays meant that I could not keep up with the art creating, as I could not have all my art supplies all over the floor. I'm working on week 14, whilst the Caravan project is nearly at week 26 (halfway), but I'm following along. So echoing again being in the right place at the right time, the quote that appears on the back of my first page appeared this week on my Facebook news feed from one of the groups that I follow and it just followed the theme that "I am Allowed to Be" following on from Letting Go, Freedom and the feeling I got from graduating this week - see
http://ajewelshiningthrough.blogspot.com/2010/06/plaudits-and-pizza.html No such thing as chance ;)

This piece is based on a blog I wrote in Sept last year on my main blog - a jewel shining through: http://ajewelshiningthrough.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-am-what-i-am.html The paper just went so well with the journalling :) Wish I could draw like that really - perhaps one day :)
